about

Presented at Arise Festival, Loveland, Colorado, 10 August 2014.

I cannot publish this without admitting that what once seemed like the most important talk I've ever given now feels obsolete. The emphasis I placed on choice – committing to returning, every moment, in a fresh surrender to the voice of intuition – may be perhaps the highest task that we can give our selves. But the most pernicious and unquestioned of society's condoned addictions *is* the separate self – and ultimately, breaking that addiction brings us to the lived experience that choice is an illusion.

How do we reconcile the deep and practical importance of attending to the whole intelligence that each of us possesses with the knowing that the little self deciding to attend to it is not actually behind the wheel? We can't. It's not an issue of the intellect.

I offer this to anyone who might enjoy or benefit from conversations on addiction and desire and mindfulness and new beginnings. In retrospect, it is a kind of ladder to the Moon that only makes it just beyond the chimney. But perhaps it points you in the right direction.

love
Michael
